(This was provided by the MTA in October. We will continue to provide updates as they are received.)
Construction is expected to start on 2nd Ave between 69th and 73rd Streets in early October 2008.
The Work Zone areas will be from 69th Street to 74th Street. Changes along this area will begin on October 6th thru October 10th with:
- The installation of traffic signs
- Relocation of the bus stops between 69th and 70th and 71st and 72nd on 2nd Avenue; starting October 15, the new bus stop will be located at East 70th Street
There will be work zones on both the East and West side of 2nd Ave.
- Concrete road barriers with chain link fence on top of them will be placed on the West side of Second Avenue to create work zones for the removal of trees, removal of parking meters, removal of mail boxes, removal and relocation of street lights, traffic signals, and drilling soil borings.
- There will be a reduction in the width of the sidewalk on the West side from its current shape down to 7 ft wide.
- The work zone on the East side of the Second Avenue will be similar to the West side with the exception that this work will be done behind temporary construction drums instead of concrete barriers.
- There will not be any daytime parking on the East or West sides of Second Avenue between 69th Street and 74th Street.
- Construction will be primarily on the West side of the street until December 2008 at which time the work zone will be moved to the East side.
Approximately 1 week after the initial work begins October 13th thru the 17th
- Fire hydrants will be removed and relocated.
- Electrical Systems and Traffic and Control Systems will be installed at 69th St shaft site and 72nd St. shaft site.
- We will conduct building inspections and reports.
Beginning in December:
- The primary work zone will move to the East side of the Second Avenue and will be similar to the West side.
- There will be a reduction in the width of the sidewalk from its current shape down to 7ft.
- Water, sewer and gas mains will be replaced and relocated.
There will be use of mobile (cherry pickers) cranes to relocate traffic signals and remove trees. Larger lattice boom Cranes will also be used later in the construction process and shaft mining. Trees will be replaced at the end of the project.
The shafts will become part of the 72nd St station construction work.
